Sustainable building materials in Ireland

Building with a lower carbon footprint

More Irish self-builders, architects and businesses now look beyond energy use and ask how much carbon goes into the building itself. Choices such as timber frame or cross-laminated timber, wood fibre or hemp insulation, lime renders, low-carbon concrete and reclaimed materials can all reduce the embodied carbon of a project.

On Archizone you can browse listed suppliers of sustainable and low-carbon building materials and contact them directly. Searching is free, and new listings are added every week.

What to look for

  • Evidence, not slogans. Ask for an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) or other independent data on embodied carbon.

  • Certification for Irish use. Check that products are CE marked and, where relevant, NSAI Agrément certified, so they meet Building Regulations.

  • Moisture behaviour. Natural and breathable materials need the right build-up. Ask the supplier for tested details for Irish conditions.

  • Sourcing. Ask where the timber or raw materials come from and whether they are FSC or PEFC certified.

  • Installer experience. Some materials need trades who know how to use them. Ask the supplier who they recommend.

FAQ

Are sustainable materials more expensive?

Some cost more up front, others are similar to conventional options. Prices depend on the product, availability and installation. Get quotes for full build-ups, not just the material, to compare fairly.

Can natural insulation meet Irish Building Regulations?

Yes, when the product is certified and used in a tested build-up that meets the required U-values and moisture performance. Your designer or assigned certifier should confirm the details.

Do SEAI grants cover sustainable insulation?

SEAI insulation grants are generally based on the measure (attic, cavity, internal or external wall) rather than the brand or material, but the product and installer must meet SEAI's requirements. Check with SEAI and your contractor.
