What Are Local Citations? A Guide for Irish Businesses
A citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number, usually in a directory or a business profile. Search engines compare these mentions to check that your business is real and to confirm where it operates. When the details match, that supports your local visibility. When they conflict, customers and search engines have to guess which version is right.
Structured and unstructured citations
Structured citations appear in directories and business profiles that have set fields for name, address, phone number, website and category. Google Business Profile, Bing Places and industry directories are examples.
Unstructured citations are mentions elsewhere: a local news article, a blog post, a sponsor page for a club or event, or a supplier's "where to buy" list.
Why citations matter
Local search results depend on several things, mainly relevance, distance and how well known a business is. Citations are one input among many, and they matter less than your Google Business Profile, your reviews and the content on your own website. They still earn their place for three reasons:
They help customers. A wrong phone number or an old address costs you an enquiry.
They support the details search engines already hold about you.
They give you more places to be found, especially on directories that buyers in your sector actually use.
Where to build citations first
Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
Your social profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn.
Trade bodies, Chambers of Commerce and business networks you belong to.
Directories for your sector and county.
Quality beats quantity. Twenty accurate listings on sites that real customers use are worth more than two hundred on sites nobody visits.
How to audit your existing citations
Search for your business name, your phone number in quotation marks, and any old address or old business name.
List each result in a spreadsheet with the URL, the name, address and phone number shown, and whether they are correct.
Correct what you can, and request changes where you cannot edit the listing yourself.
Merge or remove duplicate listings so there is one entry per location.
Common mistakes
Using different versions of the name, such as "Ltd", "Limited" or no suffix at all.
Leaving out the Eircode, or writing the address in a different order each time.
Using a tracking or temporary phone number on core listings.
Forgetting to update listings after a move or a change of number.
Adding keywords to your business name. This can breach a platform's rules and put your listing at risk of suspension.
Signing up to dozens of low-quality sites in one go.
A simple routine
Once a quarter, spend thirty minutes checking your main listings. Whenever your address, phone number, opening hours or services change, update your master document first, then work through the list.
