How to Choose an Irish Business Directory (and What to Avoid)

There are plenty of places to list a business in Ireland, and not all of them are worth your time. Some send real enquiries, some are mostly adverts, and some exist only to collect listing fees. This guide helps you tell them apart.

The main types of directory

  • Search and map platforms. Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect are not directories in the traditional sense, but they are the most important listings for any local business, and they are free.

  • General directories. Broad listings that cover every sector. They have a wide audience, but your business sits among thousands of others.

  • Local directories. Listings for a town or county. Useful if most of your customers are nearby.

  • Industry and niche directories. Listings for one sector, such as construction, furniture or hospitality. The audience is smaller but more likely to be looking for what you supply.

  • Lead and quote platforms. Sites that sell you enquiries, usually per lead. They work differently from a directory profile, so compare the costs carefully.

Free or paid?

Free listings cost nothing, but they are often crowded, ad-heavy and lightly checked. Paid listings fund moderation and upkeep and usually give you more space for photos, descriptions and links. The useful question is not "free or paid" but "will this put my business in front of the right people for a price that makes sense?" A sensible order is to complete the free essentials first, then add one or two paid listings where your buyers actually look.

Eight questions to ask before you list

  1. Who uses it? Is it aimed at Irish buyers and at your sector?

  2. Are listings reviewed? Directories that accept everything fill up with spam. Reviewed ones stay credible.

  3. What does a listing include? Look for a description, logo, photos, county, contact details and a link to your website.

  4. Is the price clear? Check whether prices include VAT, how renewal works and how to cancel.

  5. Can you edit your listing yourself? You should be able to update details without emailing someone.

  6. Can you find the directory? Search for its name and a few of its listings. If nothing appears in Google, it may be too new or too weak to help.

  7. Is there a real business behind it? Look for a contact email, terms and a privacy policy.

  8. Does it make promises that sound too good? Guaranteed rankings, guaranteed traffic or thousands of links for a small fee are warning signs.

Red flags

  • Guarantees of rankings, traffic or sales

  • No visible contact details, terms or pricing

  • Auto-renewal buried in small print

  • Listings copied from other sites without permission

  • Pages packed with pop-ups and adverts

How Archizone approaches it

Archizone is a niche directory for Irish suppliers in construction, furniture, outdoor living, hospitality and sustainability. We review every listing before it goes live, show our prices upfront (from €14 a month + VAT) and let you cancel any time. No directory can honestly promise rankings or enquiries, and we do not. What we offer is a clear profile with your logo, photos, county and contact card, plus a link to your website, in a place where buyers go to find suppliers.
